It is a good suggestion we know who is who, but on the other hand some would rather hold those views privately or be undecided or in the course of their experiences in the discussion forum change their mind!
If you start a discussion and say, "only those who've stated their position in the interest section of their profile" can participate, that would be a way to screen people out. Or you can say in a discussion, "please state your viewpoint regarding X before you say anything else."
Me personally, especially since I reach out to students who are undecided, don't want them to be inhibited from participating because they have to declare their beliefs.
One reason I like author moderation is every person has their view about the proper way to conduct a discussion. The forum rules now allow for people to run the discussions the way they like (provided of course they have willing participants).
